“The Girl Who Smiles”
Three times yesterday. Three different conversations. Three separate people. “How can you always be in such a good mood? Even with your car accident and now the job thing, it seems like you just have no worries.” “I’m not sure … Continue reading

I’m Sorry Self
Big, fat, crocodile tears now. Her voice shook as she gripped my hand a little tighter. “I didn’t think it would matter mom. It’s mine.”

But you have to set that standard and know that first. Do you understand that?” Continue reading

I open the door, hoping that all the things I’ve heard are lies. The creak is muffled by the sounds of sobbing. Some softly crying, some wailing, some frozen in fear, immobile and unable to understand what it happening. “Mami! … Continue reading

“Room”
The doorknob hits my hip as I stand there, still groggy, toothbrush in hand. “Mommy, can you make room for me?” I scoot over, pulling my robe closer around my body as she walks in and hugs my waist. “Good morning … Continue reading

The Little Big Year
Oh the memories. This was my first home after I left the shelter. 900 square feet with 2 bedrooms and 1 very tiny bathroom. The washer was in the kitchen and the dryer was in a closet in another room. … Continue reading

My take on church…
I remember Sundays at my house growing up. We didn’t always go to church, but my mom tried to make sure we went as often as possible. And on the days that we did go to church, it was utter chaos … Continue reading

Man, sometimes I wonder how people do the emotions thing. I am generally pretty mellow, but not last week. I got mad twice last week. Like, really mad. Like, raise my voice and cuss mad. Like, the mad I always said … Continue reading
